Overview:
- Participants will engage in research on the evolution, ecology, and conservation of Hawaiʻi’s native land snails.
- Use integrative methods (high-throughput sequencing, field ecology, captive rearing experiments).
- Study dietary ecology and conservation needs of threatened land snails.
- Curriculum Development: Collaborate with K-12 teachers to develop science curriculum based on research.
- Mentorship: Work with scientists at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum and Department of Education.
Program Structure:
Summer Program (7 weeks, 6/9/25 - 7/25/25):
Full-time, hands-on research experience.
Curriculum development experience for future science educators.
Stipend provided (for housing, transportation, etc.).Part-time School Year Program (2025-2026):
Participants work with teachers and mentors to implement the curriculum.
Must be present in Hawai‘i during the school year.

Requirements:
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Must attend an institution of higher education and study in life sciences (with at least one term remaining after summer 2025).
- Participants must be available for the 2025-2026 school year in Hawai‘i.
Open to students from underrepresented STEM backgrounds, including Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, and community college students.
Previous research experience is not required.
