The application for the Akamai 2025 Internship Program is currently open!
The Akamai Internship Program is over 20 years old, and every summer they place 30-40 undergrads (and recently graduated seniors) in summer internships on Big Island, Maui, and Santa Cruz, CA. Most of the positions are at observatories or related companies. While the majority of projects require backgrounds in programming, mechanical or electrical engineering, a small number of them that focus on astronomical data analysis or instrumentation are good matches for astro & physics majors. Most of the accepted students have completed sophomore-level coursework or higher.
The Akamai Internship Program offers college students from Hawai‘i an opportunity to gain summer work experience at an observatory, company, or scientific/technical facility in or affiliated with Hawaiʻi. Similar to last year, they will have placements available in Hilo and Waimea on Big Island, Kihei and Pukalani on Maui, as well as at UC Observatories, Santa Cruz.
The program has placements for students from community colleges and four-year universities from a wide range of STEM majors, including engineering, computer science, astronomy & physics. Eligible students include those either attending a University of Hawaiʻi campus or kamaʻaina studying out of state.
Akamai is a unique program with a long history of success. There are now more than 500 Akamai alumni, and more than 250 working in STEM jobs.
