How to Apply
Applications are open to i) undergraduate students, ii) unclassified students (and professionals).
Students should declare their intention to pursue the certificate as early as possible by registering here so that they can be assigned an advisor, and added to the program mailing lists for special events, guest speakers, employment opportunities. It will also help us better adapt class sizes to meet demand.
When students are ready to graduate, they must file a verification of Minor or Certificate form with their respective college:
- College of Natural Science (includes Information and Computer Sciences, Unclassified Students/Professionals). Meet with ICS Advisor, Kenny Kaaiakamanu-Quibilan (kennydq@hawaii.edu).
- College of Arts & Humanities and Languages, Linguistics & Literature (includes Academy for Creative Media, Theater & Dance)
- If you are in any other department, you can file your form with Kenny Kaaiakamanu-Quibilan in ICS.

How to Apply
Prerequisites and Eligibility
- Applicants must have completed a calculus course that covers limits, derivatives, partial derivatives, and integrals.
- Applicants must have completed a programming course that covers basic data types, program control structure, and functions.
- Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Applicants are ineligible for the certificate if they already have a B.S. in CS or Math with the Data Science specialization. Similarly, students with a certificate in Data Science from UH Hilo are ineligible.
This program is open to: (1) unclassified students (professionals), and (2) undergraduate students in any department. Students should declare their intention to pursue the certificate as early as possible by registering here. This will allow us to add you to the program mailing lists for advising, special events, and employment opportunities. It will also help us better adapt class sizes to meet demand.
Students at UH do not need to apply. After taking the required courses, they can request the certificate from the Department of Information & Computer Sciences. They will need to meet with the ICS undergraduate advisor to go over the certificate verification form. It is highly encouraged to meet with the ICS undergraduate advisor at the beginning of your studies to create an academic plan to complete the certificate requirements.
Verification
When students are ready to graduate, they must file a Verification of Minor or Certificate form with the ICS Academic Advisor, Kenny Quibilan (kennydq@hawaii.edu).

How to Apply
Requirements
Students pursuing this degree should meet the degree requirements for a regular Master of Science in Computer Science. Gateway course: ICS 311 with a grade B or higher.
To be admitted into the program, students must submit the Graduate Admissions Applications as well as all required program admission materials specified in the “Graduate Study” section by the start of their junior year (5th semester).

My name is Kenny Kaʻaiakamanu-Quibilan and I advise students within the Information & Computer Science program here at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa (UHM). People often describe me as a very down to earth and approachable individual. I enjoy the outdoors and being in the sun. My favorite hobbies are going to the beach and hiking with friends.
Currently, I am a graduate student in the Educational Administration program here at UHM. My bachelor’s degree, which I also earned at UHM, is in Economics. That being said, computer science plays a vital role in modern day economic research. Knowledge of computer science and software engineering allow researchers to generate models that are used in forecasting economic trends.

My main goal is to apply Data Science and technology to natural world systems through the Hawaiian world view in order to combine my love for my Hawaiian culture and technology. My name is Tawanza Farmer! I am a Graduate Assistant Advisor for the Information & Computer Science Department. I’m an alumna of UH Mānoa with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies. I am currently working on my Master’s degree in the Department of Second Language Studies with an interest in second language acquisition through technology.
I started learning Korean in 2017 with mobile apps and it sparked my interest in learning how people learn languages in today’s digital world. Ever since I was young I’ve traveled a lot and been interested in experiencing diverse cultures. So far I’ve traveled to Mexico, Aruba, the Bahamas, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Czechia,Thailand,South Korea, Japan ,and China. When I have free time I love exploring new boba shops and dessert cafés.
I’m really looking forward to connecting with you and helping you on your academic journey. I really appreciated all the support I received from everyone right from the beginning of transferring to UH and I hope to pay it forward by assisting you to the fullest of my ability!

My name is Krysten Nakamura and I will be serving as a Peer Advisor for the UH Mānoa Information and Computer Sciences program. I enjoy hanging out with friends, playing video games, and taking photos of the moon.
I am currently a senior earning a degree in English from UH Mānoa, as well as a BAM student in the English Department, and will be beginning to pursue my Master's this Fall. I am also a member of the UH Marching Band, current President of the English Majors Association, and have been working an on-campus job at UH Mānoa in the ICS Department for three years.
While I am not an ICS major, I am well-versed in the many courses, extracurriculars, and opportunities UH Mānoa has to offer, and my goal is to assist you in pursuing any and all interests you discover at UH Mānoa. During my free time, I enjoy reading comic books (specifically manhwa) and novels, playing video games, drawing or painting, and spending quality time with friends and family!

Hello! I joined the College of Natural Sciences team in June 2018, but I’ve been an advisor at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Study Abroad Center since 1997. I received a double BA in Japanese and French, and an MA in French language and literature, both from UHM. While a student I studied in Germany, Argentina and France. Besides English, I speak Japanese, French, Spanish and German, at various levels. The skills I learned while navigating different languages and cultures still serve me professionally and personally.
I encourage all students to consider participating in a study abroad program while at UHM. It doesn’t have to delay graduation and can be a truly fulfilling experience.
